Description

This chicken cordon bleu casserole brings all the elegant flavors of the classic dish—tender chicken, savory ham, creamy Swiss cheese—into an easy, comforting one-pan bake topped with golden breadcrumbs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 8 oz deli ham, diced
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (or Gruyere)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ¼ cup dry white wine (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp butter, melted (for topping)
  • Fresh parsley or thyme for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tbsp butter. Whisk in flour and cook 2-3 minutes. Slowly whisk in milk, broth, Dijon mustard, thyme, and wine. Simmer 5-7 minutes until thick. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Layer diced chicken evenly in baking dish. Add ham, then sprinkle with 1½ cups shredded cheese.
  4. Pour sauce over the top, spreading evenly. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and a pinch of salt. Sprinkle over casserole, then top with remaining cheese.
  5. Cover with foil and bake 35 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15-20 more minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  6. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Use chicken thighs for extra moisture and flavor. Try different cheeses like Gruyere or fontina. Add pre-cooked vegetables like broccoli or mushrooms for a complete meal.
