Method
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, gently toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until evenly coated.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
- If the topping starts to brown too quickly, loosely tent the dish with foil for the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
- Let the apple crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For best results, use cold butter when making the topping. This will create a more crumbly texture. You can add chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, to the topping for extra flavor and crunch. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
