Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • 8x8 inch baking dish
  • Large bowl
  • small bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Pastry blender or fork
  • Oven
  • Spatula
  • Peeler
  • Core
  • knife
  • whisk

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, gently toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until evenly coated.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  9. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, loosely tent the dish with foil for the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
  10. Let the apple crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use cold butter when making the topping. This will create a more crumbly texture. You can add chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, to the topping for extra flavor and crunch. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
