Ingredients

  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cups French fried onions, divided

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Large bowl
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • 1.5-quart baking dish
  • Spatula or spoon
  • Can opener

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the drained green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Stir in ⅔ cup of the French fried onions, gently folding them in.
  4. Pour the mixture into a 1.5-quart baking dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly around the edges.
  6. Remove from the oven and top with the remaining ⅔ cup French fried onions. Spread evenly.
  7. Bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and crispy. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  8. Let the casserole cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use whole milk instead of low-fat. Drain the green beans very well to avoid a watery casserole. To prevent the French fried onions from burning, cover the casserole with foil during the last few minutes of baking if needed. The casserole can be assembled ahead of time (without the final onion topping) and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Add the onions just before baking. Experiment with different cream soups like cream of celery or cream of chicken. Add shredded cheese, crumbled bacon, or sautéed mushrooms for variations.
