Ingredients

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Equipment

  • medium bowl
  • whisk
  • Pastry blender or fingertips
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  2. Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture.
  3. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Work quickly to prevent the butter from melting.
  4. Stir in the chopped pecans or walnuts, if using.
  5. Sprinkle evenly over the top of your unbaked pumpkin bread batter.
  6. Bake according to your pumpkin bread recipe instructions.

Notes

For best results, use very cold butter. You can even chill the dry ingredients and mixing bowl for 15 minutes before starting. If the streusel topping starts to brown too quickly during baking, tent the bread with foil. Leftover streusel topping can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
