Method
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Add the pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente.
- Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
- Drain the pasta and set aside.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
- Drain off any excess grease.
- Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it simmer for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes, to allow the flavors to meld. If the sauce is too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water to thin it out.
- Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the beef sauce.
- Toss to coat the pasta evenly in the sauce.
- Serve immediately, topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
Notes
For a richer flavor, brown the beef properly and simmer the sauce for a longer time. Salt the pasta water generously and cook the pasta al dente. Customize the recipe by adding vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, or zucchini. You can also use ground turkey or Italian sausage instead of ground beef. Leftover Beef Pasta can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days and reheated in the microwave or skillet.
