- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the drained green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and pepper.
- Stir in ½ cup of the French fried onions.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 1 ½-quart casserole dish.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the top.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of French fried onions evenly over the casserole. Add the shredded cheddar cheese if using.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the French fried onions are golden brown.
- Let stand for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Don't overcook the green beans, as they are already cooked. Use good quality French fried onions for the best flavor and texture. For a richer flavor, sauté some sliced mushrooms in butter before adding them to the casserole. You can prepare this casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours; add the French fried onions just before baking. Adjust milk for desired creaminess. Add a dash of hot sauce for a little kick. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
