Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 10 ounces mini marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • Green food coloring gel preferred
  • Red candy melts
  • ½ teaspoon vegetable shortening or coconut oil

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Large saucepan
  • Heat-resistant spatula
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Parchment paper or aluminum foil
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter (optional)
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • knife
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Remove from heat once melted.
  3. Add the mini marshmallows to the melted butter and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  4. Add a few drops of green food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture and stir until you achieve your desired shade of Grinchy green.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the Rice Krispies cereal. Gently stir until the cereal is evenly coated with the green marshmallow mixture.
  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and gently press it down evenly using the back of a spatula or lightly greased hands.
  7. Let the Rice Krispies treats cool and set for at least 30 minutes.
  8. While the treats are cooling, place the red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl with ½ teaspoon of vegetable shortening or coconut oil.
  9. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat.
  10. Once the Rice Krispies treats are set, remove them from the pan using the parchment paper or foil.
  11. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes. Alternatively, cut into squares and then cut out hearts with a knife.
  12. Dip the bottom of each heart into the melted red candy melts, or drizzle the candy melts over the top of the hearts.
  13. Add sprinkles if desired.
  14. Place the decorated hearts on parchment paper to set completely before serving, about 15-20 minutes.

Notes

Use fresh marshmallows for the best texture. Don't overcook the marshmallows. Grease your hands to prevent sticking when pressing the mixture into the pan. Melt the candy melts slowly to avoid burning. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor. Variations: add mini chocolate chips, peppermint extract, crushed candy canes, different colored candy melts, or pretzel sticks.
