Method
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
- Combine Ingredients: Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes.
- First Rise: Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Sauce: While the dough rises, combine tomato sauce, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a small saucepan. Simmer over low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Divide the Dough: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 6-8 equal portions.
- Roll and Shape: Roll each portion into a thin circle, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
- Layer and Roll: Spread a thin layer of sauce over each circle, leaving a small border. Sprinkle with mozzarella and provolone (if using). Arrange 6-8 pepperoni slices around the edge of the circle, overlapping slightly. Fold the circle in half, then in half again to form a cone shape. Gently curve the cone to resemble a rose petal.
- Arrange the Roses: Place the heart-shaped pizza roses on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish: Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.
- Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy these adorable pizza roses.
Notes
For best results, use a high-quality pizza dough recipe. Thinly sliced pepperoni works best for the rose petals. Adjust baking time based on your oven. Store leftover pizza roses in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
