Method
- Make sure your shrimp are fully thawed, peeled, and deveined. Pat them dry with paper towels.
- In a bowl, toss the shrimp with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, water, rice vinegar, minced garlic, cornstarch, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Add sesame oil to the mixture and whisk to combine.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the seasoned shrimp to the hot skillet in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if necessary.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until pink and opaque. Do not overcook.
- Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside.
- Pour the honey garlic sauce into the same skillet you used to cook the shrimp.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Continue to simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
- Add the cooked shrimp back to the skillet with the thickened honey garlic sauce.
- Toss the shrimp to coat them evenly with the sauce.
- Cook for another minute or two, allowing the sauce to glaze the shrimp beautifully.
- Remove the skillet from the heat.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions, if desired.
- Serve immediately over rice, noodles, or your favorite side dish.
Notes
Use large or jumbo shrimp for best results. Don't skip the cornstarch for a thicker sauce. Freshly minced garlic provides the most intense flavor. Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to your spice preference. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a skillet or microwave. For a richer version, add 2 tablespoons of butter to the sauce. To make Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp, add 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet along with the honey garlic sauce. Thread shrimp on skewers and grill for a smoky flavor. Use the honey garlic shrimp as a filling for tacos.
