  • 2 chai tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose leaf chai tea
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree not pumpkin pie filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup, brown sugar, or sweetener of choice adjust to taste
  • 1 cup milk dairy or non-dairy; oat milk recommended
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup ice
  • Optional: Whipped cream
  • Optional: Cinnamon
  • Optional: Pumpkin pie spice
  • Optional: Caramel sauce
  • Optional: Cinnamon sticks or star anise for garnish

Method
 

  1. Steep chai tea bags or loose leaf in hot water for 3-5 minutes. Remove tea bags or strain loose leaf.
  2. Combine pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and sweetener in a small saucepan.
  3. Heat the pumpkin spice mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until warm and fragrant (about 2-3 minutes).
  4. Add the warm pumpkin spice syrup to the brewed chai and stir well to combine.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Let the chai-pumpkin spice mixture cool slightly.
  7. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  8. Pour milk over the ice.
  9. Gently pour the cooled chai-pumpkin spice mixture over the milk and ice.
  10. Stir everything together well to combine all the flavors.
  11. Top with optional whipped cream, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, or caramel sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

For a richer flavor, use a high-quality chai tea. Adjust the sweetness to your preference. Cooling the chai mixture before adding it to the ice prevents dilution. Experiment with different milk types to find your favorite. Store leftover chai-pumpkin spice mixture in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For a vegan option, use non-dairy milk and vegan toppings. For a stronger pumpkin flavor, add more pumpkin puree or pumpkin pie spice. To make a frappe, blend all ingredients with ice until smooth.
