Ingredients

  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk, dark, or white chocolate
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons vegetable shortening optional
  • Valentine's Day sprinkles optional

Equipment

  • Heart-shaped molds or mini muffin tins with paper liners
  • Microwave-safe bowl or double boiler setup (saucepan and heat-safe bowl)
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula or spoon
  • Refrigerator

Method

  1. Prepare your heart-shaped molds by lightly greasing silicone molds with cooking spray or lining mini muffin tins with paper liners.
  2. Melt the chocolate using either the microwave method (30-second intervals, stirring in between) or the double boiler method (over simmering water, stirring occasionally) until smooth.
  3. If using, stir vegetable shortening into the melted chocolate until fully incorporated.
  4. Spoon a layer of melted chocolate into each heart-shaped mold, coating the bottom and sides evenly.
  5. Place the molds in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to allow the chocolate to set.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine peanut butter, powdered sugar, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well until smooth and creamy.
  7. If the filling is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk or cream. If it's too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
  8. Remove the molds from the refrigerator. Spoon the peanut butter filling into each heart, filling them almost to the top, leaving space for the final chocolate layer.
  9. Spoon the remaining melted chocolate over the peanut butter filling, covering it completely. Smooth the top with a spatula or spoon.
  10. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle your favorite Valentine's Day sprinkles over the top (optional).
  11. Place the molds back in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely set.
  12. Gently remove the Chocolate Peanut Butter Valentine Hearts from the molds and enjoy!

Notes

For best results, use high-quality chocolate and don't overheat it during melting. Chill time is crucial for the hearts to hold their shape. You can substitute the peanut butter filling with Nutella, cookie butter, or buttercream frosting. These hearts can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for up to a month. For easy release, run a warm knife around the edges of the hearts before removing them from the molds. Add a sprinkle of sea salt on top for a salty-sweet contrast.
