- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) or your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
- If baking, toss the tater tots with olive oil in a large bowl. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. If using an air fryer, place the tater tots in the air fryer basket in a single layer. You may need to cook in batches.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or air fry for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Check frequently to prevent burning.
- Arrange the cooked tater tots on a serving platter or baking dish.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the tater tots.
- Scatter the crumbled bacon over the cheese.
- If using the oven, bake for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. If using the air fryer, air fry for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted. You can also microwave for about 30-60 seconds. Watch carefully to prevent burning!
- Drizzle with sour cream and sprinkle with chopped green onions.
- Add any other desired toppings, such as jalapeños, diced tomatoes, or salsa.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve immediately while hot and fresh.
Notes
For extra crispy tater tots, ensure they are spread in a single layer without overcrowding the baking sheet or air fryer basket. Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting. Cook bacon until perfectly crisp. Experiment with different cheese and topping combinations to create your own signature loaded tater tots. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or air fryer. To prevent sogginess, add toppings just before serving. You can warm the serving platter in the oven while the tater tots are baking to keep them warm longer.
