Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • Garlic powder optional
  • Fresh herbs thyme or rosemary), finely chopped (optional

Equipment

  • Non-stick skillet or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter (2-3 inches)
  • knife
  • Cutting board
  • Butter knife

Method

  1. Soften the butter.
  2. If cheese slices are large, cut them into smaller squares to fit the bread.
  3. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Place a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of four bread slices.
  5. Top each cheese-covered slice with another slice of bread, butter-side up.
  6. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, press firmly down on each assembled sandwich to create heart shapes. If you don't have a cookie cutter, use a knife to carefully cut out heart shapes.
  7. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
  8. Place the heart-shaped sandwiches in the preheated skillet.
  9. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  10. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

For uneven browning, gently press down on the sandwich with a spatula. If the cheese isn't melting, lower the heat and cover the skillet with a lid for a minute or two. Experiment with different cheese combinations like Gruyere and Swiss, brie and apple slices, or goat cheese. Serve with dipping sauces like tomato soup, ranch dressing, or honey mustard. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
