Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or water (optional, for thinning sauce)

Equipment

  • crockpot
  • Measuring spoons
  • mixing spoon
  • forks for shredding

Method

  1. Place chicken breasts or thighs into the crockpot.
  2. Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, brown sugar, salt, and pepper over the chicken.
  3. Pour barbecue sauce over the seasoned chicken, coating evenly.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours.
  5. Shred the chicken using two forks directly in the crockpot.
  6. If desired, add chicken broth or water to adjust sauce consistency. Stir well to combine.
  7. Serve warm on buns, over rice, or in salads.

Notes

Use boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs for best texture. For a saucier finish, add a splash of chicken broth at the end. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for 4 days or freeze beautifully for meal prep.
