Ingredients

  • 6-8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup prepared cheese sauce store-bought or homemade
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2-3 green onions, thinly sliced
  • Sour cream optional
  • Jalapeños, sliced optional
  • 2 tablespoons butter for homemade cheese sauce
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour for homemade cheese sauce
  • 1 ½ cups milk for homemade cheese sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon salt for homemade cheese sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder for homemade cheese sauce

Equipment

  • baking sheet
  • Oven or air fryer
  • Large bowl or serving platter
  • Saucepan
  • whisk
  • knife
  • Cutting board
  • measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat oven or air fryer according to the french fries package directions.
  2. Spread the frozen french fries in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake or air fry until golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through.
  4. While the fries are cooking, cook the bacon until crispy using your preferred method (pan-fried, oven-baked, or microwaved). Let cool slightly and then crumble into small pieces.
  5. If making homemade cheese sauce, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  6. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to form a roux.
  7. Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth.
  8. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  9. Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, salt, and garlic powder until the cheese is melted and smooth.
  10. Transfer the cooked fries to a serving platter or large bowl.
  11. Drizzle the cheese sauce evenly over the fries.
  12. Sprinkle the crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the fries and cheese sauce.
  13. For extra gooeyness, optionally pop the fries under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  14. Garnish with sliced green onions, sour cream, and sliced jalapeños (if desired).
  15. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

For best results, serve immediately to maintain crispiness. Store leftover ingredients separately. Reheat fries in the oven or air fryer to restore crispness. Cheese sauce can be reheated gently on the stovetop, stirring frequently. Get creative with toppings! Try adding caramelized onions, pulled pork, or a drizzle of BBQ sauce. For a spicier kick, add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce or use pepper jack cheese. Don't overcrowd the fries on the baking sheet or in the air fryer to ensure even cooking and crisping.
